The Republican Party’s theft of another Supreme Court seat following the death of Ruth Bader Ginsburg unleashed a wave of support for court expansion as thought leaders, policy makers, and concerned citizens recognize the importance of rebalancing the court.
It has been more than 50 years since a majority of Supreme Court was appointed by Democratic presidents, though Democrats have won the popular vote in 6 of the last 7 presidential elections. Republican presidents have appointed 15 of the last 19 justices, and 5 current justices — a majority of the court — were appointed by Republican presidents who took office after losing the popular vote.
The Court’s current 6-3 conservative majority is undemocratic in composition and in action. These justices have gutted the Voting Rights Act, invited unlimited corporate spending on our elections, embraced gerrymandering, and assisted the Republican Party’s assaults on democracy.
The need for court expansion to save our democracy is undeniable. So, too, is the urgency of expanding the court in time to protect the rights of all Americans and urgently-needed solutions to our climate crisis, criminal justice reform, and more.
Take Back The Court was the first organization to call for Court expansion in 2018. Its work education the public about the need for court reform laid the groundwork for the tremendous momentum for Expansion.
Take Back The Court Action Fund’s mission is to translate awareness of the need for Court expansion into action. We will work to enact Court expansion by the end of 2021, building public support for legislative expansion, encouraging policymakers to support reform, and holding accountable those who stand in the way of reform.
