AS SUPREME COURT HEARS TEXAS ABORTION CASE, CONGRESSWOMAN CHU CALLS FOR EXPANSION

Take Back the Court Recognizes Congresswoman Chu for Leadership for Women, Communities of Color

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (November 1, 2021) — Congresswoman Judy Chu, a longstanding advocate for women and communities of color who is leading the charge to pass the Women’s Health Protection Act and protect abortion access, announced her support of The Judiciary Act of 2021 to add four seats to the Supreme Court.

“With so many important court decisions coming soon, like the future of abortion access in our country, we need the Judiciary Act to expand the Court and ensure that it is representative of America,” said Congresswoman Judy Chu. “We are now at a place where the Court has been manipulated by a minority to be intentionally unrepresentative of the country. The Constitution never set a specific number of judges because it was designed to grow with the country. That's why it's time for Congress to do what we have done 7 times before and pass the Judiciary Act now!”

“Congresswoman Chu continues to be a hero for people who are vulnerable to this Court, and we are energized to have her leadership on the Judiciary Act,” said Take Back the Court Action Fund Executive Director Sarah Lipton-Lubet. “If we are going to counter the Court’s brazen attacks, we need a ‘both-and’ strategy — we need both legislation to protect our rights, and legislation to expand the Court so six hyper-partisan conservative justices can’t undo that progress. This is the urgent response the Court’s onslaught on our rights demands.”

Take Back the Court raises awareness about the urgent need to expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court to address the theft of the court by Senator Mitch McConnell during the Obama Administration. Without adding seats, Congress will not be able to restore the right to vote, ensure reproductive freedom, protect workers, halt our climate emergency, or pass new legislation. Court expansion, which can be accomplished without a constitutional amendment, is the only reform that enables the un-rigging of the system and the restoration of democracy.
