DECISION ALLOWING DOMESTIC ABUSERS TO HAVE GUNS HEINOUS AND DESPICABLE

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (February 3, 2023) — The Fifth Circuit — a Trump-packed court notorious for its heinous and harmful rulings — ruled that perpetrators of domestic violence should have a right to own guns. Take Back the Court released the following statement on behalf of its president, Sarah Lipton-Lubet, in response to the news:

“Despicable is too kind a word for the Fifth Circuit’s decision. Given a chance to offer the most basic level of protection to people living under the constant threat of domestic violence, the court instead opted to privilege the right's obsession with guns over women, children, and families’ safety. It’s heinous. To call this part of the ‘justice’ system is a complete corruption of the word.

"This ruling is a direct result of the Supreme Court's wildly reckless decision to open the floodgates to more gun violence in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association v. Bruen last summer. The blood that will inevitably be shed as a result of this decision is on the hands of every judge and justice who has used their power to privilege guns over people's lives.”
