RIGHT-WING SUPREME COURT TAKES NEW SWIPE AT OUR SOCIAL SAFETY NET

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (November 7, 2022) — Tomorrow morning, the Supreme Court will hear arguments in Health and Hospital Corp. v. Talevski. In this case, the right-wing justices have given themselves an opportunity to roll back legal protections for people receiving public benefits — cutting them off from legal recourse if their rights are violated, and disproportionately harming people with disabilities.

Take Back the Court released the following statement on behalf of its executive director, Sarah Lipton-Lubet:

“Cost of living is skyrocketing across the country, but the conservative Supreme Court justices are set to make it harder for American families to afford housing, access medical care, and put food on the table. That should tell you everything you need to know about how far out of touch with reality they are.

“The right-wing majority is poised to deny Americans their day in court when their needs are unmet or their rights to public benefits are violated. It’s just one more example of how this Supreme Court is rigging the legal system to support the wealthy and well-connected while shutting everyone else out. These extremists won’t stop rolling back our rights until we stop them. We have to expand the Court.”

Take Back the Court raises awareness about the urgent need to expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court to address the theft of the court by Senator Mitch McConnell during the Obama Administration.
