SUPREME COURT DISMANTLES ANTI-CORRUPTION PROTECTIONS, UNDERMINES DEMOCRACY

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (May 16, 2022) — Today, the Supreme Court's 6-3 right-wing supermajority took another jab at our nation’s election protections and sided against the Federal Election Commission in Federal Election Commission v. Ted Cruz for Senate. Take Back the Court released the following statement on behalf of its executive director, Sarah Lipton-Lubet:

“This rigged Supreme Court takes every available opportunity to dismantle the safeguards of our democracy, and this decision is just its latest blow. A Court that is openly hostile to a fair democratic system is not a Court that will protect the voices of the American people. If we want a judiciary that actually serves the interests of the public, we have to expand the Court and we have to do it now.”

Take Back the Court raises awareness about the urgent need to expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court to address the theft of the court by Senator Mitch McConnell during the Obama Administration. Without adding seats, Congress will not be able to restore the right to vote, ensure reproductive freedom, protect workers, halt our climate emergency, or pass new legislation. Court expansion, which can be accomplished without a constitutional amendment, is the only reform that enables the un-rigging of the system and the restoration of democracy.
