SUPREME COURT RULES THAT CITIES CAN PUNISH PEOPLE FOR BEING UNHOUSED
(June 28, 2024) – Today, the Supreme Court released its opinion in City of Grants Pass, Oregon v. Johnson. In a cruel and dehumanizing decision, the right-wing supermajority ruled that cities and municipalities can punish unhoused people for sleeping outside when shelters are full, enabling them to clear encampments and harming some of their most vulnerable community members.
“Criminalizing homelessness while accepting millions of dollars worth of luxury vacations and other gifts pretty much sums up the state of the right-wing majority: Cruel, out of touch and out of control,” said Sarah Lipton-Lubet, president of Take Back the Court.
