TAKE BACK THE COURT APPLAUDS HOUSE PASSAGE OF H.R. 1

Court expansion is essential to protect this progress

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (March 3, 2021) — Take Back the Court Director Aaron Belkin issued the following statement on tonight’s passage of H.R. 1 in the House:

“Around the country, Republicans are engaged in a systematic effort to rig the playing field, introducing hundreds of measures to disenfranchise young voters and people of color. And just yesterday, the 6-3 Supreme Court heard oral arguments on what remains of the Voting Rights Act after the Roberts Court gutted it in 2013, making it clear: they will act to roll back our rights, not defend them.

“Democracy is under attack, and tonight’s passage of H.R. 1 in the House is a major step toward fighting back. Now we must move quickly to protect this progress by ending the filibuster, passing H.R 1 in the Senate, and expanding the Court. That is the only way to ensure a stolen Court cannot overturn the will of the majority.”

Take Back the Court raises awareness about the urgent need to expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court to address the theft of the court by Senator Mitch McConnell during the Obama Administration. Without adding seats, Congress will not be able to restore the right to vote, ensure reproductive freedom, protect workers, halt our climate emergency, or pass new legislation. Court expansion, which can be accomplished without a constitutional amendment, is the only reform that enables the un-rigging of the system and the restoration of democracy.
