TAKE BACK THE COURT STATEMENT ON ANTICIPATED FIRST DRAFT OF PRESIDENTIAL SCOTUS COMMISSION REPORT

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (October 13, 2021) — Take Back the Court Executive Director Sarah Lipton-Lubet today released the following statement in anticipation of the first public draft report to be issued by the Presidential Commission on the Supreme Court.

“While the Commission had their heads down studying, the stolen Supreme Court barreled towards the destruction of our democracy at full speed. Since the Commission was formed, the Court has gutted the Voting Rights Act, effectively overturned Roe v. Wade in Texas, blocked President Biden’s eviction moratorium, reinstated Donald Trump’s cruel ‘Remain in Mexico’ policy, curtailed workers’ rights to organize, and eroded government transparency by ruling in favor of a Koch-backed dark money group.
“The stolen Court is not wasting any time in its quest to dismantle our democracy, stymie progress, and further marginalize the most vulnerable among us. And while we can’t recover the time lost to this academic exercise, the window of opportunity to save our democracy remains open — but it is closing fast. The only reform that rises to the moment is expanding the Court.
“Instead of waiting another month for the Commission to finalize its research paper, President Biden should immediately announce a concrete plan to defend his agenda and Americans’ fundamental rights from the right wing justices’ assault.”

Take Back the Court raises awareness about the urgent need to expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court to address the theft of the court by Senator Mitch McConnell during the Obama Administration. Without adding seats, Congress will not be able to restore the right to vote, ensure reproductive freedom, protect workers, halt our climate emergency, or pass new legislation. Court expansion, which can be accomplished without a constitutional amendment, is the only reform that enables the un-rigging of the system and the restoration of democracy.
