THE SUPREME COURT IS DOUBLING DOWN ON DISMANTLING OUR DEMOCRACY

SAN FRANCISCO, CA (September 30, 2022) — As the Supreme Court gears up to begin another devastating term this Monday, Take Back the Court issued the following statement on behalf of its executive director, Sarah Lipton-Lubet:

“Radical extremists stole the Supreme Court to hurt people, and they’re not going to stop until we get in the game and expand the Court.

“Millions of people are suffering the consequences from last term, where conservative justices rolled back abortion rights, climate protections, gun safety, and more. But the justices’ response to mounting pressure and dismal approval ratings isn’t to back down from their attacks — instead, they’re doubling down.

“On Monday, the Court begins its new term on a mission to attack LGBTQ rights and indigenous rights, end affirmative action, gut environmental protections, further dismantle voting rights, and help state legislatures steal elections. There’s no mincing words at this point: You either stand with progress and are working to expand the Court, or you’re standing by while six unelected extremists continue taking away our rights and dismantling our democracy.”

Take Back the Court raises awareness about the urgent need to expand the number of seats on the Supreme Court to address the theft of the court by Senator Mitch McConnell during the Obama Administration. Without adding seats, Congress will not be able to restore the right to vote, ensure reproductive freedom, protect workers, halt our climate emergency, or pass new legislation. Court expansion, which can be accomplished without a constitutional amendment, is the only reform that enables the un-rigging of the system and the restoration of democracy.
